Leg Veins
Consultations offered at our two convenient locations in Alhambra and Santa Ana

The unattractive presence of leg veins is a common issue for many individuals. The veins in the legs are critical for proper blood circulation, but sometimes, these veins can become problematic, leading to conditions such as varicose veins and spider veins. These issues can affect both the appearance of the legs and overall vein health.
Unsightly leg veins are an embarrassment to millions of women, causing them to cover their legs in shame. As veins become more noticeable, many women can no longer wear bathing suits, skirts, shorts, or more, opting instead to hide their legs altogether to prevent their unsightly veins from showing. At Skinzone Laser & Cosmetic Surgery, we use a combination of laser and injection therapy (sclerotherapy) to achieve excellent results for our patients who suffer from spider, reticular, or varicose veins.
Skinzone Laser & Cosmetic Surgery is led by Dr. Hannah Vu, one of Southern California’s laser enhancement and cosmetic surgery experts. Our practice prioritizes attentive, customized care, tailoring each treatment plan to a patient’s unique needs. Take the first step toward smooth, attractive legs free from unattractive veins today by scheduling a consultation. If you have any questions or would prefer to schedule your appointment over the phone, please call our Alhambra or Santa Ana offices at (626) 329-4555 or (714) 361-1555, respectively.

About Leg Veins
Leg veins are an integral part of the circulatory system, responsible for returning deoxygenated blood from the legs back to the heart. (1) There are two primary systems of veins in the legs: superficial veins, which are closer to the skin’s surface, and deep veins, which are deeper within the leg tissues. When these veins do not function properly, problems can arise. For example, venous insufficiency occurs when blood does not flow correctly through the veins, often causing them to enlarge and twist, resulting in varicose veins. (1)
Varicose veins are enlarged and painful veins that are often dark blue or purple, while spider veins are smaller red or blue vessels that resemble spider webs. Both conditions can cause discomfort and lead to feelings of self-consciousness. (1) More importantly, untreated leg vein issues can result in complications such as deep vein thrombosis or chronic venous insufficiency, which can have serious implications for one’s overall health.
While both embarrassing and burdensome, these conditions respond well to various treatments. Laser therapies and injection regimens both help to reduce the visible presence of these veins, leading to smooth, attractive legs that are not populated by unsightly blood vessels.
Benefits
Treatments for leg veins offer numerous advantages, enhancing both appearance and comfort. With the expert guidance of Dr. Vu and personalized treatment, Skinzone Laser & Cosmetic Surgery patients see improvements in their leg vein conditions through:
- Improved appearance: Treatment can effectively diminish the visibility of varicose and spider veins, restoring a smooth, natural look to your legs.
- Reduced discomfort: Addressing problematic veins often alleviates symptoms such as leg swelling, aching, and heaviness, contributing to overall well-being.
- Enhanced confidence: With less visible vein issues, many patients report a boost in self-esteem and confidence when wearing shorts, skirts, or swimsuits.
- Better circulation: Correction of venous insufficiency improves blood circulation, promoting better vascular health.
- Minimally invasive options: Many treatments, such as sclerotherapy and EVLT, involve little to no downtime, allowing for a quick return to daily activities.
- Long-lasting results: Many patients enjoy enduring improvement, especially following accurate treatment tailored to their particular needs.
Candidates
Candidates for leg vein treatments typically include individuals who experience visible varicose veins or spider veins, symptoms of venous insufficiency, including swelling, cramping, or pain, a family history of vein issues, or leg fatigue or restlessness. Ideal candidates should also be in good overall health and have realistic expectations about their outcomes. An initial consultation with Dr. Vu will help assess whether you are a suitable candidate for any of the treatments available at her office.
Consultation
A personal consultation is essential to evaluate your specific concerns and develop a customized treatment plan. During this visit, Dr. Vu will review your medical history, perform a physical examination, and conduct an ultrasound assessment of your leg veins. This thorough examination ensures the most effective approach for your situation.
The consultation will also provide an opportunity to discuss potential risks and expected outcomes, ensuring that you feel informed and comfortable moving forward with treatment. To arrange a consultation with Dr. Vu at Skinzone Laser & Cosmetic Surgery, please call one of our offices or submit our online contact form.
Preparation
Before undergoing treatment for leg veins, you will receive specific preoperative instructions to ensure safety and optimal results. Because these treatments are minimally invasive and non-surgical, they do not necessitate extensive preparation measures, but there are still some steps to abide by nonetheless. Following these preparations enhances the likelihood of a smooth procedure and encourages optimal recovery. These instructions will be unique to your goals and medical history, but common preparations include:
- Avoiding taking blood thinners or medications that could increase bleeding.
- Stopping the use of nicotine products in the weeks leading up to your treatment (if applicable).
- Wearing compression stockings if recommended, as they may aid in reducing symptoms before your procedure.
- Preparing transportation home if necessary.
- Attending follow-up consultations as needed.
Procedure
Skinzone Laser & Cosmetic Surgery is renowned for its leg vein treatments because of our unique approach that combines laser therapy treatments and injections.
Laser Therapy
During laser therapy treatments for leg veins, the hemoglobin found in red blood cells in the veins selectively absorbs highly controlled flashes of laser light. This light heats the hemoglobin, causing the blood to clot. The vein then collapses and the body slowly removes it with the natural filtering systems. (2) Because the skin around the veins does not absorb the laser light, there are no scars or visible marks. Some immediate improvement is typically visible, but most patients benefit from multiple treatments spread out over time before achieving optimal results. (2) Generally, we recommend at least three sessions.
Sclerotherapy
Sclerotherapy is a relatively painless in-office treatment for leg veins. During this treatment, we inject the FDA-approved medication into the spider vein using a microfine needle. The solution washes over the tiny cells that line the inner wall of blood vessels, dries them out, and causes them to shrink. Within a few weeks, the targeted blood vessels fade away, potentially improving circulation.
Sclerotherapy can be performed in conjunction with laser treatment to maximize the clearing of the veins and minimize the side effects.
Recovery
Recovery times differ depending on the treatment method employed. Most patients can resume light activities within a day or two. Mild discomfort and general soreness in the legs are common, and this can be effectively managed with prescribed or over-the-counter medications. Compression stockings may be required to promote healing and reduce swelling. We recommend keeping the legs elevated with pillows when resting as well. Patients should avoid strenuous activity for at least a week post-procedure. Follow-up visits will be scheduled to monitor healing and address any concerns. Over time, you should notice a significant improvement in the appearance of your legs, along with reduced symptoms related to leg veins.
Results

Patients can anticipate seeing improvements in their leg vein conditions shortly after treatment. Sclerotherapy may take several weeks for final results to appear, while the effects of laser therapies can be noticeable within a few days.
Many individuals report high satisfaction levels with their results, enjoying smoother legs that are free from visible veins. It is essential to maintain open communication with Dr. Vu during follow-ups to ensure desired outcomes are met.
