About Upper Eyelid Lifts

An upper eyelid lift is a surgical procedure that aims to remove excess skin, fat, and tissue from the upper eyelids to correct the changes of the natural effects of aging. Also known as an upper blepharoplasty, this procedure can correct both functional and aesthetic concerns, such as obstructed peripheral vision or a disproportionate or aged appearance. Dr. Vu can perform an upper eyelid lift to help her patients achieve a brighter and more expressive appearance, renewing their confidence in the process.

Benefits

Upper eyelid lifts provide several significant benefits, including:

  • Rejuvenated Appearance: Upper eyelid lifts remove excess skin and fat from around the eyes to restore a more alert and refreshed appearance.
  • Reduced Puffiness: Dr. Vu can remove deposits of fatty tissue from above the eyelids to reduce a puffed or bulging appearance.
  • Smoother Skin: You will be able to enjoy the feeling of smoother and tighter skin around your upper eyelids.
  • Refined Facial Sculpt: Excising excess fat or tissue can create a more balanced and proportionate facial profile.
  • Widened Peripheral Vision: This procedure can correct any obstructions within your field of vision that hanging or sagging skin causes.
  • Long-Lasting Results: The results of an upper eyelid lift can last for several years, especially with the proper maintenance and care.
  • Discreet Scarring: Dr. Vu places each incision within the natural creases of your eyelids, hiding their appearance in plain sight.

Candidates

You may be a suitable candidate for an upper eyelid lift if you have loose or sagging eyelid skin, as well as puffiness above your eyes. This procedure is also highly effective when addressing weakened eyelid muscles, as well as chafing or irritation from rubbing eyelid skin.

Anyone interested in an upper eyelid lift should be in good general health and maintain realistic expectations regarding the outcome of their procedure. Patients should ideally be nonsmokers or willing to quit using nicotine throughout their procedure and recovery. Dr. Vu will finalize each patient’s candidacy during their personal consultation, after assessing their medical history and skin quality.

Personal Consultation

The first step to revitalizing your eyes is attending a personal consultation at either our Alhambra or Santa Ana office. During this consultation, Dr. Vu will meet with you one-on-one to determine your candidacy and discuss what an upper eyelid lift consists of. She will ask about your medical history and current prescriptions to rule out any underlying medical risks. She will also listen to your aesthetic concerns and treatment goals and examine the condition and quality of your eyelid skin, as well as your overall facial anatomy. With these details, Dr. Vu will be able to create a surgical plan that addresses each of your concerns while helping you attain your desired appearance.

Preparation

Once you decide to proceed with your procedure, you will receive a set of detailed pre-operative instructions. Following these instructions closely will facilitate a smooth and successful procedure.

Dr. Vu may require you to discontinue taking blood-thinning medications or supplements. If applicable, you will need to cease nicotine and alcohol consumption in the weeks before your procedure and throughout your recovery. You will need to prepare to take time away from your career and other commitments, and arrange transportation home from your procedure. We also recommend filling any prescriptions ahead of time and arranging for at-home care for the first few days of your recovery

On the day of your upper eyelid lift, we ask that you arrive with clean skin that is free from any makeup or skincare products.

Procedure

At the start of your procedure, you will receive local anesthesia to provide an awake yet relaxed experience. Dr. Vu will place an incision that follows the natural crease of your eyelid before lifting the skin to access the underlying tissues and structures of your eyelids. She will carefully remove excess skin, tissue, and fat, as well as repair any loosened or weak muscles to restore a brighter and more youthful-looking appearance. After attaining your desired look, Dr. Vu will suture each incision using specific techniques to create a more desirable eyelid crease while minimizing any potential scarring in the process. (3) Dr. Vu’s team will then move you to our recovery suite before releasing you home.

Recovery

When recovering from an upper eyelid lift, it is common to experience some swelling, soreness, or bruising around the treated areas. These effects are temporary and will gradually dissipate on their own, but resting with your head elevated, using a cold compress, or taking recommended medications will also help you manage them. You may be able to return to your career and other light activities after resting for approximately one to two weeks, but you will need to continue refraining from strenuous or physically demanding activities.

Dr. Vu will provide a full set of post-operative instructions that will help you navigate any activity restrictions, potential side effects, incision care, and more. Following these closely is important, as proper recovery is vital for high-quality results.

Results

After you completely heal from your procedure, you will be able to enjoy the full results of your upper eyelid lift. You will enjoy a more restful and rejuvenated appearance, as well as a wider and more expressive look overall. You may also notice improvements in your facial balance and sculpt after removing any hanging or bulging tissue and fat. The results of your upper eyelid lift will last, but you will need to take care of your skin to maintain the longevity of your results.
