This consultation is a chance for Dr. Vu to meet each patient and find out how she can best help them. She will examine each patient to evaluate their physical anatomy before learning more about their medical history, concerns, and desired results. Using this information, Dr. Vu will plan out each patient’s procedure, recommending the best strategies to help each patient achieve their goals. Preparation

Dr. Vu will provide each patient with pre-operative instructions to help them prepare for their procedure. Patients will need to arrange for transportation home from their procedure, as well as time away from their careers and other social commitments. She may ask patients to temporarily discontinue the use of certain medications, specifically those containing blood-thinning properties. Those who smoke will need to cease their nicotine use several weeks before their appointment, discontinuing until fully healed. Alcohol consumption should also be avoided several days before each patient’s labiaplasty.

Procedure

Each patient’s procedure will begin with the administration of local anesthesia so that each patient is awake yet comfortable throughout the procedure. Dr. Vu will then start to remove excess tissue from around the labia using one of two techniques: the trim technique or the wedge technique. The technique used will be determined at each consultation.

  • Trim Technique: The trim technique involves the excision of tissue from the outer edge of the labia, as well as the vaginal lips to adjust the size and shape of the labia. This technique is ideal for patients who may be concerned about darker or discolored tissue.
  • Wedge Technique: The wedge technique is a technique that can be used to reduce the size of the labia while still maintaining the natural edges. A V-shaped wedge will be removed from the center of the vaginal lips, before being sutured for a natural-looking yet neater appearance.

Dr. Vu may perform additional treatments, such as a clitoral hood reduction or labia majora reduction, for enhanced results.

Recovery

Labiaplasties are performed on an outpatient basis, meaning that each patient will be released home to recover on the same day as their procedure. It is normal to experience bruising, swelling, and general discomfort; however, these effects will subside on their own and may also be managed through the use of pain medications.

Most patients can return to work within a week or two, but should continue avoiding physical activities or strenuous tasks for several weeks. Additionally, the use of tampons or engagement in sexual activity should be refrained from for several weeks or until approved by Dr. Vu. Further recovery instructions will be provided at each patient’s consultation.

Results

Each patient’s labiaplasty results will become more apparent throughout each individual’s recovery. Patients will be able to enjoy their newly shortened labia, as well as an overall improvement in comfort throughout their daily lives. Women will be able to enjoy physical activities, such as sexual intercourse, running, cycling, or horseback riding, without any irritation, as well as wearing more form-fitting clothing without insecurity or fear.
